Privet Garden
Privet Garden
Nantucket, MA
The project featured the unusual challenge of integrating two distinct properties including six separate buildings, into one cohesive vision. To link the disparate spaces, the design reconceptualizes the Nantucket hedge garden, developing a contemporary landscape framework whose clarity of form and space erases any impression of disunity and results in a series of surprising, innovative garden spaces.
Cliff Head
Cliff Head
Cape Neddick, ME
Dramatic linear rock outcroppings at this coastal Maine property inspired a site design which organizes the house and major landscape elements along a series of parallels extending from the rocks themselves. Approaching the house, a narrow drive winds through a small wooded area to a parking court where parallel bands of stone allude to the unique shoreline. On the ocean side of the house, these parallels create and define a series of terraces and retaining walls which capitalize on the expansive water views. Breaking the pattern, a weir-edge pool projects over the edge of the rocks creating a dynamic counterpoint to the linear bands and extending the view to the horizon.
Manatuck Beach
Manatuck Beach
Watch Hill, RI
The site design for this Rhode Island property integrates both an expanded program and existing three-story home into a dense, seaside neighborhood while maintaining views to the ocean beyond. At the front yard this balance is achieved through the insertion of bold, linear forms that define the parking area, entry sequence, and front lawn; and through the addition of a crisp privet hedge to screen the adjacent street without disrupting the dramatic views from the elevated front porch. The landscape sequence extends down the hill to a lower yard at the rear of the house. Within this space the formal language of the architecture is used as a logic to incorporate a bocce court, vegetable garden and secondary parking court; allowing the owners to take full advantage of a larger landscape defined by wetlands setback regulations.
Ledge Crop
Ledge Crop
Hingham, MA
A winding driveway over rolling terrain provides the transition from the street to a private home sited to preserve and embrace sculptural rock outcroppings and existing woodland. Carefully carved clearings provide recreational lawn areas that enhance the drama of the emerging ledge and extend views from the house while preserving privacy. The landscape embraces the house through a series of courtyards, terraces and gardens. Stairs and walkways link these spaces creating an alternating sequence of expansive and embracing gardens.
Forest Edge
Forest Edge
Washington, NY
The Master Plan for this 100-acre horse farm established a landscape that unites the existing stable and home by seamlessly transitioning from a functional equestrian facility to a lush woodland garden. A winding driveway leads you past paddocks designed to undulate with the rolling topography and large shade trees that provide structure and scale to the expansive property. A woodland garden with newly planted mature trees, shrubs, and perennials surrounds the main residence and guest house evoking the native oak forest. Stone materials used throughout the landscape have been carefully selected and arranged to blur the distinction between the natural and designed landscape.
Pocomo Point
Pocomo Point
Nantucket, MA
Both the overall landscape plan and the detailed design for a new swimming pool were kept simple to feature views to conservation land and a tidal marsh. Gardens incorporating native shrubs along with ornamental grasses and perennials were developed near the main house and guest house. Elsewhere, planting was limited to mown lawn and meadow grasses in order to defer to the spectacular views.
Sayles Residence
Sayles Residence
Chestnut Hill, MA
To preserve the intended character of the original 1908 landscape design, mature evergreens that had concealing the house were transplanted to the perimeter of the property. Terraces and balustrades were recreated, and gardens were reconfigured to heighten the interconnection between house and garden. Hedges, walls, and curvilinear beds create a bold geometry while subtlety insinuating a series of garden spaces. A restrained plant palette of low groundcovers and perennials is punctuated by sculptural trees and shrubs, affording views between spaces and restoring a feeling of expanse to the property.
Hagerty House
Hagerty House
Cohasset, MA
A highly exposed section of rocky New England coastline provided both challenges and opportunities for this new site plan for a historic house. The project site is subjected to storm surges and the house sits entirely within the buffer zone of the coastal bank; less than 12’ above mean sea level. Because of these conditions, the project required rigorous review of engineering and Conservation Commission review. The iconic 1938 home by Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer had numerous alterations over the years. One alteration included the addition of a sprawling concrete terrace that blanketed the entire seaward side of the house and extended beneath the span of the building’s second floor. A simple and clear landscape plan, in deference to the structure’s pure geometric volumes, was designed with a goal to break the ground plane expanse with a variety of textures, including wood decking, stone terracing, native coastal plantings and lawn. A subtle patterning in the stone terrace helps define a pathway out to the seawall and new stairs that provide access to the beach.
Norman Hall
Norman Hall
Watch Hill, RI
Located on Block Island Sound, the Master Plan for this renovated stone house focused on integrating new design program elements, the scale of the architecture, and the rugged, coastal setting. The design incorporates mature trees, open lawn, terraces, a motor court, and a new pool area all in proportion to the existing house. Waterfront gardens compliment the dramatic views and provide a scaled enclosure for the outdoor living spaces.
Terrace Gallery

Boston, MA
The design for these terraces integrates custom paving, planters and planting design within existing long, narrow outdoor spaces. The new granite pavers are set at an angle to the building; the joints provide an extension of the interior jointing pattern. The planters include a custom-designed metal facade and metal vine trellis that recall much of the interior metalwork.
Lowder Brook
Lowder Brook
Dedham, MA

The master plan for this estate seamlessly integrates a new home into its naturalistic setting. Near the house, garden spaces utilize simple forms of understated geometry to compliment the formal facades of the architecture. These gardens provide spaces both grand, as at the front entry; and uniquely intimate, as at the rear garden. They frame the dramatic elevations of the architecture while providing a bridge to the bold sweeps of lawn and dense woodlands which characterize the rest of the property. The end result is a subtlety-crafted landscape which at once seems at harmony with its formal and naturalistic cues.

Aucoot Cove
Aucoot Cove
Mattapoisett, MA

Fundamental to the design was a driveway that provides a framed view of the ocean while approaching the main house through native woodland. Simple lines of privet hedging help to organize views and define smaller garden areas that relate to the individual character of each building. Incorporated into the approach drive and oceanside planting, a broad native palette of salt and wind-tolerant plant material highlights the coastal setting.

Heath Hill
Brookline, MA

Working with existing house and tennis court locations, this project became a study of how a carefully-considered series of restrained design decisions could dramatically alter the landscape. Simple adjustments to the hardscape, planting, and grading resulted in a series of gardens which are lush, expansive and ultimately works with the renovated architecture to imbue a sense of place.

Napa, CA
The site plan for this rolling 68-acre property integrates a new residence, pool and outdoor living space while preserving the natural beauty of the site. Stands of existing canopy trees are underplanted with native grasses to create a lush and inviting woodland. Nestled within, stone terraces define a series of public and private garden spaces. Set within one such terrace, a simple rectangular pool captures the reflections of both the canopy and the architecture.
Shore Lane
Shore Lane
Boca Grande, FL
This master plan combines two adjacent properties into one coalescent estate anchored by a broad lawn that captures expansive views of Gulf of Mexico beyond. A raised terrace and swimming pool further blur the distinction between the two properties by providing a compelling link between the main house and guesthouse. Lush tropical plantings, including an allee of Royal Palms complete the transformation and create a sense of refined permanence.
Sippican Harbor
Sippican Harbor
Marion, MA
The renovation of this Buzzard’s Bay estate provided the opportunity to introduce a new entry drive, series of outdoor terraces, swimming pool, and gardens that could provide year-round interest. The new entry drive curves around a broad lawn that acts as a foreground for viewing the house while providing a large, open playspace. Formal terraces align with the three red tile roof peaks and command panoramic views over Sippican Harbor.
1330 Boylston
1330 Boylston
Boston, MA
Overlooking Fenway Park, the 1330 Boylston rooftop pool terrace plan was organized to maximize seating areas and to capture the panoramic views. The design includes a niche banquette seating area with shade structure and screen walls, furnishings, custom planters and planting
Winston Flower and Garden

Boston, MA
The design for this new flower and garden center creates a framework for exterior retail areas that adapt to changing seasonal garden displays. The site plan reorganizes the vehicular circulation to maximize parking at the perimeter of the site, preserving the site’s core for retail display. New pedestrian entry areas were created to connect garden display with the main building. Greenhouses were sited to provide a sense of enclosure to various garden areas and a new sales kiosk was centrally located, creating an outdoor customer service area.
